When to Consider Nipple Tattooing

If you’re considering breast reconstructing on one or both breasts following a mastectomy procedure, nipple tattooing may be a great choice for you. We offer an option between 2D and what is known as 3D nipple tattooing, and Dr. Srinivasa will help you explore your choices before guiding you to the decision that’s right for you.

Nipple tattooing is typically performed three to four months after your reconstruction procedure, and the process begins with a consultation between you and your tattoo artist. Together, you’ll go over important details like shape, color, and the placement of your new nipple(s).

You’ll then go over what to expect in terms of pain management, while also signing any medical and allergy consent forms. This will be your chance to ask Dr. Srinivasa anything you might want to know about the procedure, so you can feel as comfortable and secure as possible.

The Nipple Tattooing Procedure

Nipple tattooing typically takes about 90 minutes to complete and is done using a rotary tattoo machine. This type of machine is far lighter, and also less noisy than a traditional tattoo machine, making it both easier to deal with and also more comfortable for use on areas where the skin is more delicate.

The procedure is quite similar to the application of a traditional tattoo, with a needle penetrating into the outer layers of your skin at a depth of about 1mm. This deposits ink and creates a permanent image, making this procedure much quicker and more convenient than full nipple reconstruction.

After Your Procedure

You’ll be given very thorough aftercare instructions, so you can ensure that your results heal properly and last as long as possible. We’ll give you the necessary topical creams and ointments, along with detailed information as to how you can maintain your impressive outcome. Many patients feel that nipple tattooing truly puts the finishing touches on their breast reconstruction procedure, enabling them to finally move on with their lives. When you’re ready to learn more about how nipple tattooing can help you, reach out to the Institute for Advanced Breast Reconstruction and set up your consultation with a member of our team today.
